Freezer Repair
Frost build-up, failed defrost cycles and temperature drift on Sub-Zero freezer columns and drawers.
What people describe when they ring
- Ice sheeting across the rear evaporator panel
- Freezer drifting into the teens and food going soft
- A drawer or basket frozen in place
- Compressor never resting between cycles
What it usually turns out to be
Ruled out in this order
Almost every freezer complaint on this equipment comes down to one of two things: the defrost cycle has stopped working, or air is not moving. Both look like "the freezer is failing".
- 01
The defrost cycle has stopped
A failed defrost heater, a dead terminator or a control that never calls for defrost lets frost sheet across the evaporator until air cannot pass it. The symptom people notice is a warming freezer or a drawer frozen in place — not the ice itself, which is hidden behind the rear panel.
- 02
A blocked or frozen drain
Meltwater has to get out during each defrost. When the drain heater fails the drain freezes solid, water backs up, and you get ice sheets under the baskets that come back a week after you chip them out.
- 03
Evaporator fan
A fan that has seized or is running slow leaves the coil cold and the cabinet warm. It is usually audible before it is measurable — a whine, a tick, or nothing at all when the door switch is held closed.
- 04
Sealed system, only after the rest
A slow charge loss or a restricted filter-drier does happen, and on a foamed-in evaporator it changes the repair-or-replace answer. That is why it gets measured on gauges rather than assumed from a temperature reading.
How the visit runs
Four steps, and the price lands before step four
- 1
You describe it, we ask the model number
It lives inside the fresh-food door, upper left. With the model and a temperature reading we can usually narrow the fault before the van moves.
- 2
Diagnosis on site, panels off
Gauges, a meter and a thermometer, not guesswork. Most Sub-Zero faults are found within the first half hour of the unit being opened up.
- 3
A number, then your call
Parts and labour quoted before anything is fitted. The $89 service call comes off it if you go ahead.
- 4
Repaired, then watched through a cycle
Nobody leaves on a unit that has only just come back on. We stay for a defrost or a pull-down so the fix is proven, not assumed.
What it runs
Six repairs, and the range each one lands in
Flat $89 service call covering the visit and full diagnosis, credited against the repair once you approve it.
Each range below is parts and labour on the repair itself. You are given the number for your own unit once the fault has been named on site, and nothing is fitted until you have agreed it — the price never arrives after the work.
- Door gasket or seal replacement
- $280–$670
- Evaporator or condenser fan motor
- $340–$720
- Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor
- $280–$630
- Ice maker, water valve or supply line
- $270–$820
- Electronic control board
- $430–$920
- Compressor or sealed-system repair
- $1,330–$3,180
Ranges, not quotes: the same part in a twenty-year-old cabinet wedged into a galley run is a different afternoon from a unit with clearance on both sides, and that is the difference the two ends of each range describe.
Worth having the scale in front of you: going the other way and replacing the cabinet runs $11,930–$21,080 in Phoenix — a comparable built-in replacement, before installation and cabinetry work. That is the figure a control board or a fan motor on an otherwise sound unit is measured against.

What owners said once the panel was back on
Built-in Sub-Zero calls across Phoenix.
Ice kept forming under the freezer drawers a week after I chipped it all out. The drain had frozen solid because its little heater had failed, so meltwater backed up. Two months on, still dry.

Our loft freezer crept up near twenty degrees and I only caught it when the frozen fruit turned to mush. Dry bearing in the evaporator fan, changed from the van that morning. No fuss at all.
Marlee K.Roosevelt Row
That kitchen wall takes brutal afternoon sun, and the freezer had been running for weeks without a break. Coils matted with the fine grit that blows off the mountain, plus blades caked solid. Vacuumed, gauges read, cycling normally again.
